early periodontitisPeriodontitis is an inflammatory disease affecting the periodontium, the gums that surround the teeth that act as the supporting structure to hold all the teeth in the oral cavity.  If left untreated periodontitis can lead to progressive loss of the alveolar bone around the teeth which can cause early tooth loss. The bacteria that are adhered to the tooth surfaces continue to grow with improper oral hygiene, lack of immune system and now genetics have been linked to periodontal issues.

Recent study  by Dr.Divaris at the Pediatric Dentistry Department  at University of North Carolina have found a genetic link to periodontitis. The study confirms the long-standing hypothesis that patients may be genetically predisposed to developing periodontitis.

Make sure you stay up to date with twice a year dental visits and address any questions you might have to Dr.Shah or Dr.O’Riordan during your visit.
