Upper and Lower Primary Gemination.

Most commonly seen abnormalities in primary teeth are Gemination and Fusion. Here’s what the difference between the two in simple terms !!

When two teeth develop from a single tooth bud its called Gemination.

When two root buds merge and develop into one single tooth it’s called Fusion.

Clinical appearance of the above anomalies can be similar, the only way you can tell the difference is by radiographs and also by counting the number of teeth, your child either has an extra one or is missing one!!

Most commonly occurred in primary teeth upper and lower incisors. Problem arises only when these special tooth do not exfoliate on their own, if caries is present and when there is delay in permanent teeth eruption.

Most importantly we look for any missing or similar situation with permanent teeth, Gemination or Fusion in permanent teeth most unlikely to form.

Keeping up with routine 6 month check-ups with the dentist to stay informed and monitoring the growth of all primary and permanent dentition is very important.
